On a morning where the wind was a clear factor at QPR's training ground, the Gillingham Youth team dominated first half proceedings against the league leaders. The Gills, strengthened by the return of their captain Charlie Howard, who made his full first team debut on Easter Monday, started the match brightly, keeping possession well and applying pressure on the home team's defence.

The visitors did not have to wait long until their early pressure was rewarded, when after 15 minutes, schoolboy Jack Payne found Charlie Howard from a corner, who managed to get a shot away, only for Luke Rooney to guide the ball into the back of the net from a back heel just six yards out.

Gillingham continued to dominate the contest, creating several chances without really troubling the Rangers keeper. However, the lead was doubled after 35 minutes when young Gills defender Liam Wybraniec lofted a beautifully weighted long ball over the home defence, which left winger Rory Hill leapt onto, and placed an acute lob over the stranded Hoops goalie.

The young Gills side, now buoyed by a two goal cushion, could have affectively finished off the game completely just before half-time, when Payne showed great tenacity to win a tackle and put right winger Tayler Thomas through one-on-one with the keeper. However, he saw his shot go agonisingly wide of the far post.

The Gills began the second half the way they finished the first, continuing to cause the QPR defence problems. The game seemed to be put to bed just five minutes into the second half when striker Callum Day gave the Gills a 3-0 lead. A teasing ball from right back Danny Walder forced an error from the Hoops keeper and allowed youngster Day to head in from close range.

With the game seemingly slipping away from the home side, they changed their formation in a bid to salvage something from the match. The tactical change seemed to have an effect on the side, when QPR pulled a goal back on the hour mark.

As the home side went in search for further goals to get them back in the match, the Gills held off constant pressure to produce an inspiring defensive display. Gills defenders Tom Wynter and Rimmell Daniel, both put in particularly solid displays as Gillingham recorded an impressive display away to the league's top team.
