Gills supporters have yet to get their first glimpse of new summer signing Mark McCammon but the powerful target man admits he is close to a return to action: "The injury is progressing really well. I travelled with the squad to Grays on Saturday and did some running with some of the other injured professionals before the game. I thought I'd do a few strides to see how the hamstring is and it's feeling good so I should be back in the next week or so. I am trying to push myself to feature in the friendlies this week but you have to see how your body reacts on a daily basis. I have to keep training so I can progress as quickly as possible."

"It's been frustrating for me as I wanted to come in and make an immediate impression but I haven't been able to feature in the games. With the season a few weeks away, it is all about coming back and getting fit. I haven't got to worry too much about playing catch up as I am naturally fit. Hopefully I can get three or four games under my belt in pre-season and be ready to go against Bournemouth on Saturday 9th August."

McCammon has been a patient spectator at the pre-season friendlies and he explains the squad is good enough to challenge for promotion: "From what I have seen from the squad so far, there is a fantastic team spirit here and there is a good togetherness. That is one of the reasons why I moved to Gillingham. If we can stick together on the pitch then there is no reason why we cannot be up there pushing for promotion.

"I played out on the left for Doncaster Rovers last season. I got eight goals from there. The Gaffer has made it clear that I will be playing as a centre-forward as that is my proper position. If I can score eight goals from the left wing in League One, I should be able to push on and easily top that playing up front in League Two. My fellow strikers at the club all look capable of scoring a fair amount of goals. There is good competition all around."

Simeon Jackson has looked sharp in the matches so far and McCammon is looking forward to playing alongside the Canadian international: "I think Simeon Jackson is a sharp, nippy player. He gets into good positions and has an eye for goal; he is always looking to shoot. A combination of him and I would be good."

Mark Stimson greets Mark McCammon

"Another main reason I came to Gillingham was because Mark Stimson said he'd be playing me up front. Also, the ambition of the club was a thing for me. They are looking to go straight back up. I had promotion to the Championship with Doncaster last season and I know that winning promotion is a fantastic feeling. To be involved with that at Gillingham would be a fantastic achievement."

"McCammon had a shorter close-season than most as he was away on international duty: "I was away with Barbados in June and we played two World Cup Qualifiers against the USA. There was a good game and a bad game over the two legs. We were knocked out by the Americans so that's the end of our World Cup but we have got the Digicel Caribbean Cup later this year to play."
