Gillingham 1-3 Lewes
Gillingham Ladies returned to action this weekend against a Lewes side that had already recorded a 5-0 win in the previous fixture. The afternoon was bitterly cold with a strong wind providing a daunting prospect for the Gills.
With the wind at their backs Gills attacked up the slope but failed to make any headway against a well drilled opposition. Indeed it was Donna Harris in the home goal who made two great saves in the first 20 minutes that kept them in the game. The Gills were struggling to clear their lines and on 32 minutes the ball fell to their wide player who drilled the ball low and hard into the far corner to put Lewes 1-0 up.
Gills were really struggling with the wind and never looked comfortable clearing the ball. Lewes took advantage of this uncertainty and, on 40 minutes, a low cross into the Gillingham area was met with a sweet volley to make it 2-0.
Into the second half and, now with the wind blowing into the faces of the girls, the job of reversing a 2-0 deficit was made all the more difficult. Changes were made, with Amy Goodall and Zara Phillips coming on, but unfortunately to no avail. A 64th minute corner was viciously curved into the danger area and took the slightest of touches, eventually nestling in the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Gills managed to steady their game and made some probing attacks at the Lewes defence. Their efforts were repaid when, in the 78th minute, Kirsty Woolard picked the ball up on the edge of the area and with a sweet strike from her right foot buried it via the underside of the bar to make it 3-1.

A disappointing result to end a difficult afternoon on the football pitch, but manager Darren Keating was confident that his team could come back from this defeat:
"The conditions were very difficult and our girls just didn't handle it as well as the opposition but we showed some good spells of attacking football so there is much to take from this game. We will be back in training next week and I am already looking forward to our next fixture."
