A tough tackling centre-back, Jack was a one-club man enjoying a 20-year career with Leeds United making 773 appearances and netting an impressive tally of 96 goals.

Internationally Charlton was a late bloomer, winning his first England cap under Alf Ramsey at the age of 30 against Scotland at Wembley in 1965.

He formed an instant partnership with England captain Bobby Moore and was an ever present in Alf Ramsey's 1966 England World Cup winning team.

Charlton retired as a player in 1973 at the age of 38 and began an equally successful management career with Middlesbrough.  Winning promotion to the top flight in his first season in charge for which he was named Manager of the Year.
